Things to think about:

What titles should roughly sound like. Please do not send me statements that sound like your stand/TS from your Position Paper:

The issue of female immorality during the 19th century in Kate Chopin's selected works

Death in the Selected Works of John Keats

Morbidity and Edgar Allan Poe: An Analysis

- The title should be interesting enough and have enough information to attract readers. But the details will be introduced in the introductory paragraph i.e. the titles of the texts used etc.

Guiding  your reader:

Very very important because I am your only reader and I'm going to grade your work. Guide me through your paper by organising your thoughts and ideas well. Use paragraph markers and topic sentences. Introduce every part appropriately (preamble) so that I know what to expect. Re-state your Thesis statement at the concluding paragraph so that the reader is reminded of the whole point of you writing the RP.

References:

Use APA format. In research there are hundreds of reference formats depending on the field of study you are in. We are in the education field and therefore we adhere to the APA format. Look it up. Please be aware of the minimum number of reference I need. The references have to be quoted in the body of the text. I will make an entry on that later.

Ok. That's all for now.

Research Paper- Proposals that I have responded to

I've received emails containing the RP proposals from the names listed below. I have also responded to them all. I am now waiting for them to refine their ideas and send the proposal back to me. I am not going to read any drafts that is why i need to see that your RP is well planned and clearly organised.

IMPORTANT MATTERS CONCERNING THE RP:

Number of words- Not more than 4000 words not including references. 4000 words are not a lot of words that is why i need you have a strong focus on what you want to research on. Don't waste the number of words on trivial things like author's background.

Background of the author- I seriously ask you all to adapt and rephrase all that you have found on the internet. Please do not simply copy paste everything. Give consideration on what should be a part of your RP. When dealing with the background of the author, please only pick information that is really relevant to the issue you are researching on. For example, if you are looking at feminist issues focusing on marriage and the author that you are dealing with is Kate Chopin, only present to me bits of her background that may have influenced her in her writing such characters/themes like the era that she grew up in, her personal experience in marriage, did she come from a broken family and if so you could information on how her parents were, you know that sort of things. I do not need to know where the author went to school (unless that has had influence on her thinking and writing), i do not know which river the author jumped into and drowned or hr favourite drink, unless of course it has relation to how the issue you are tackling may have influenced him/her.

Educational implucations- this part should come just before the conclusion. I'll be looking closely at how you see the texts and research would have benefit upon students in the classroom. Is the language rich and has potential to give students the opportunity to learn language through a literary work? Does it offer self developmental growth (teaching students about life and to understand themselves and the people around them) ? Does it offer cultural exposure? Think about it.

Deadline- Kwan Wei Kuen has pointed out to me that it was announced on the portal that all assignments should be in by the 30th of  April that is two weeks before the finals. I may speak to the person incharged on this, but I tell you what, why don't you just e-mail me your RP anytime before the finals are over? Is that good for you? So that means you don't have to rush for the 30th April deadline. Just send me softcopies of your RPs anytime before your final exam is over. SO no worries about the hardcopies. Email the softcopy straight to my hotmail.

Note: I'm not accepting anymore position papers please, only RPs (and probably some very minor Q and A based on the notes in the modules. It will be up this week)

Thanks.

Research Paper

Hello everyone. A huge apology for posting this late. I was caught up with so many things concerning teaching.

The second F2F as on the 7th of February 2012.

We skimmed through the contents of the module (which we will go through again a bit more in depth on this blog)

Then we spoke about the Research Paper which is your major project for this course.

So how is the Research Paper (RP) different from your Position Paper (PP)?

A position paper defends a belief.

A research paper holds all that you have researched on your topic of interest.

Research Paper  Proposal Template
Tentative title of research paper:
tentative because you might change it when you get stuck in the research or you may want a better title to reflect your paper
Example:
Poverty in the Selected Works of Charles Dickens
Child Labour in the Victorian Age as Reflected in the Works of Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy and George Elliot
The Notion of Blindness in Oedipus Rex and King Lear (comparing 2 texts but that's ok if you have enough to talk about)
Kate Chopin's Women: Are They Really Immoral?

Look at how they are different from the PP titles.

Texts used: (at least 3)

1.

2.

3.

4.

Note: Choose 3 texts by the same author or choose 3 texts with common concerns written by 3 different authors (I've given examples above)

Objective(s) of the research (what you hope to research on):

In this research, I am interested to look at...(put your objectives in point form)
1. how women are treated...(these objectives will help guide your thoughts on what you want to focus on)

2.

3.

What is your thesis statement?

The thesis statement is what controls the idea within the whole paper.

A TS is usually positioned at the end of the Introduction section. It should be re-stated at the conclusion part.

In the introduction you will discuss a bit about the background of the issue at hand and explain why you have chosen to research on this topic.

Then your thesis statement would sound like this "...this research paper will deal with feminist issues (like what?) and how this has affected the thinking of women living in the Victorian Society (if you have not mentioned the texts before, then mention here)

Of course you can phrase the TS anyway you like (look this up)

Why do you think this research is significant?

Your reasons for choosing to work on the texts and the issues.

What are the key issues in this research?

Feminism

Poverty

Broken marriages

Child Labour

Polygamy

Etc

(There can be more than one in your research)

How will this benefit your experience as a teacher and your students’ experience for literature in the ESL context? (Educational Implications)
An important part of the RP.

How do you propose to format your research paper? What are the possible headings of sections and subsections in your research? E.g. Introduction, Background of the author etc. It all depends on the needs of your research.

Look at other thesis

1.0 Introduction
     1.1

2.0 Background of the other
     2.1 Education
     2.2 Marriage

Remember, it all depends. It's your RP so arrange and organise the contents so that you guide your readers well.

Note:

1. Find the appropriate way of quoting references. Rephrase information found and acknowledge sources. Be careful to not plagiarise even if you did not mean to.

2. DO NOT use Wikipedia for the research as it is not a reliable source. Go to JSTOR, Google scholar and work on published articles.

3. I want to see you referring to at least 5 books / journals in the research and this DOES NOT include the literary texts you are working on.

****************************************************

Think about what you want to do. Complete this template. Copy paste and email it to me (not as an attachment but in the email body itself)

Do it as soon as possible. I'm not setting deadlines.

All the best.
